<p style="text-align: justify;">Ancora una volta l’anello debole della vettura era rappresentato dal propulsore: il V10 Cosworth ribattezzato Fondmetal. Con un motore più potente e un adeguato sviluppo, la Minardi M02 avrebbe potuto piazzarsi a metà classifica.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Dopo la positiva stagione di esordio, cresce l’apporto economico della Telefonica (cambia anche la livrea) che continua a sostenere lo spagnolo Marc Genè a cui viene affiancato l’argentino Gaston Mazzacane, con Luca Badoer richiamato alla Ferrari per proseguire il suo ruolo di collaudatore.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Nel Gran Premio d’esodio, in Australia il 12 marzo, Genè porta la M02 all’8° posto, con Mazzacane che replica il risultato il 21 maggio in occasione del GP d’Europa al Nurburgring. In Austria, all’ A1 Ring, lo spagnolo è nuovamente 8°.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Il<strong> 27 agosto</strong>, in occasione del GP del Belgio tra i Sali-scendi delle Ardenne, il Minardi team taglia il traguardo dei <strong>250 GP.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Durante la stagione la Minardi conquista nuovamente la top-10: Mazzacane è 10° ad Interlagos e sulla pista di casa, nel tempio della velocità di Monza, Marc e Gaston tagliano il traguardo rispettivamente in 9° e 10 ° posizione. Grazie a questi risultati, il Minardi Team conquista nuovamente il 10° posto nella classifica Costruttori, davanti alla Prost di Alesì e Heidfeld.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Purtroppo la stagione è macchiata dalla scoperta del male incurabile a Rumi, costretto a cedere le sue quote, trovando in Paul Stoddart il nuovo acquirente.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Sia i portamozzi che la scatola-guida erano in titanio fuso, mentre il blocco del cambio rappresentava una pionieristica fusione in lega di magnesio. Il retrotreno della M01 era senza dubbio la parte più riuscita dal punto di vista aerodinamico con un cofano motore e appendici laterali che miglioravano il flusso dell’aria davanti alle gomme posteriori.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Sul fronte piloti Gian Carlo Minardi e Gabriele Rumi (entrato in società nel 1997) richiama a Faenza Luca Badoer, che già nel 1995 si era messo in evidenza prima di diventare un punto di riferimento nello sviluppo delle Ferrari, affiancandogli il debuttante spagnolo Marc Genè, sostenuto dalla Telefonica.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Badoer non tradì le attese, dimostrando tutto il suo valore tecnico e velocistico in particolare durante il <strong>GP d’Europa</strong> del <strong>26 settembre</strong>, corso al nuovo Nurburgring.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Sotto una pioggia battente, che contribuì a limare le differenze fra grandi e piccoli team rendendo meno influente la potenza dei propulsori, Badoer porta la sua M01 nelle primissime posizioni, arrivando fino al quarto posto davanti a Ralf Schumacher su Williams, a Jaques Vileneuve su BAR e al compagno di box Genè, segnando importanti riscontri cronometrici che lo stavano facendo avvicinare a Barrichello su Stewart (3°).</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">I sogni di gloria sia di Luca che del Minardi Team si infrangono al 54° passaggio, a 13 giri dalla bandiera a scacchi, per il cedimento del cambio, costringendolo a parcheggiare la monoposto a bordo pista. A risollevare il morale del team, ci pensa lo spagnolo che regala alla scuderia il primo punto stagionale, 6° al traguardo.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Quella bellissima gara fu una confortante dimostrazione sia delle qualità della Minardi M01, il cui Tallone d’Achille era (ancora una volta) solo il motore, che di Luca Badoer.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Vanno però ricordati anche i due ottavi posti, conquistati al GP di San Marino (2 maggio) da Badoer e al GP di Canada da Marc Genè (13 giugno)</p>
